Investigation of the structural matrix effect in the polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine in the region of pH > 6·0

Popis: The polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) has been investigated in aqueous solutions of low molecular acids in the pH region >6·0. The formation of a branched product was detected in this pH region and a proposal as to its probable structure is put forward. Branching takes place as a result of secondary transformations of ionene fragments, the possibility of which is due to association of ionene fragments in solution. Evidence of such association is seen in the results of electron microscope investigations and in the concentration dependence of the reduced viscosity of ionene solutions. The polymerization of 4-VP in aqueous solutions of polystyrene-sulpho-acid under similar conditions leads to the formation of a linear ionene, i.e. a structural matrix effect is revealed here.
