This chapter reports on a case study of how an action research partnership between the leadership of a school and members of the surrounding community in one of the many socio-economically challenged areas in South Africa acted as a catalyst for improving school functioning. We explain how enactment of the Participatory Action Learning and Action Research process as a strategic management tool helped to disrupt traditional notions of how a school should be managed, encouraging community involvement for mutually beneficial outcomes by recognizing the Indigenous knowledge inherent in all stakeholders in the educational process. The foregrounding of action learning in this process means that the learning is lifelong, sustainable and applicable for both local and global stakeholders interested in improving education, whether in developed or developing contexts. |
