Popis: The introduction lays out the definition of co-operation for this book. Co-operation means here not only a way of gathering and redistributing resources, but also a form of movement building in which two kinds of operations are always at play: one moving toward a utopian goal, the other moving against it. This dual operation produces a multiplicity of present-centered activisms, three of which the book theorizes: sustained incipience, planned failure, and pluripresence. The introduction also establishes the stakes of the book for social movement theory and black studies by offering two overarching arguments. First, these alternative temporalities provide new ways to think about the present. In Black studies the present has been underexplored, for it has come to stand in for a tragic past or an alternative future, thus becoming less a category of time than a container for it. Second, the black cooperative movement stretching from 1890s to the 1970s offers a unique lens into when movements happen, a focus on time largely overlooked by the prevailing spatial focus on where movements happen.
