This paper reports the development of a real-time Residential Gateway (RG) operating system. The RG operating system enables a general-purpose computer to serve as a RG in a Full Service Access Network (FSAN). The key elements of the RG operating system include: (1) the ATM switching mechanism; (2) the CPU scheduling and service flow control algorithm; and (3) the admission and congestion control algorithms. These algorithms are discussed in this paper. The current RG operating system has been implemented on a PCI bus Pentium II personal computer. Preliminary experimental results have shown that the system can handle a line rate of about 200Mbps. |
