Popis: | The article examines the gift-giving behavior of Ferdinando de' Medici, an Italian cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church and the Grand Duke of Tuscany, 1581-1609. The use of gifts as diplomatic tools, as religious offerings and as objects of tribute is discussed. A number items given as gifts by de' Medici are described including items of clothing, saddlery and weapons. Other topics include conflicts between religion and politics, social position in relation to gift-giving, and gendered aspects. |
