The use of constructed wetlands (CW) has gradually been considered as a viable, cost-effective and efficient alternative worldwide for the treatment of domestic wastewater, especially for small and decentralized agglomerates. Despite the high population density on the coast, the Algarve region has a dispersed population density in the interior characterized by small agglomerations. Aguas do Algarve, S.A. (AdA) is the company responsible for the management and exploration of the wastewater treatment systems in many of these small agglomerations of Algarve. The optimization of resources, costs and efficiencies are key issues in the exploration of these treatment systems. This work aimed to analyze and evaluate the operational performance of four constructed wetlands WWTP operated by AdA for seven years, as well as the specific investment and operating costs. Results are compared with classical compact activated sludge technologies in order to identify the most advisable solution from an environmental and economical point of view. |
