Fingerprinting the Stone at Saint-Denis: A Pilot Study

| Popis: | This article concerns art-historical questions raised by the twelfth-century sculptural ensembles at the abbey of Saint-Denis and applies the information gained from neutron activation and multivariate statistical analyses of the limestones to provide answers. We collected samples of limestones from the western portals, the Porte des Valois, and capitals in the crypt, as well as from dispersed objects now in museums which have been associated with the abbey by tradition or by documentation. The one hundred sixty-four samples tested also included stone used in the eighteenth and nineteenth-century campaigns of restoration of the portals. After processing samples with a certifiable Saint-Denis provenance and undisputed dates, we could confidently propose twelfth-century and nineteenth-century reference groups based on the compositional profile of trace elements present in each sample.
