Popis: A fatal case caused by an H5N1 virus infection was investigated. In addition to serials of clinical chemistry assays, we tested the patient’s peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and stool by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time RT-PCR, and/or immunofluorescent assay. Our results suggested that PBMC can carry the virus and help the H5N1 virus spread to the human gut, resulting in infection with inflammation and viral discharge. * PBMC : peripheral blood mononuclear cells RT-PCR : reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction ARDS : acute respiratory distress syndrome OB : occult blood IgM : immunoglobulin M H5 : hemagglutinin N1 : neuraminidase PCR : polymerase chain reaction WHO : World Health Organization PBS : phosphate buffered saline FITC : fluorescein isothiocyanate NP : nucleoprotein HPAI : highly pathogenic avian influenza
