Popis: Empirical data indicate that–in the absence of intervention–individual motivation to quit smoking is highly liable to change (Hughes et al., 2005). Indeed, while approximately half of cigarette smokers may attempt to quit in a given year (Babb et al., 2017), only 3%-5% will achieve long-term cessation (Hughes et al., 2004). For many, the presence of a cohabitating smoker (typically romantic partner) presents a particular challenge. In dyads where one-or-both persons wish to quit smoking, partners must negotiate interpersonal dynamics (e.g., stress, differing schedules, romantic conflicts), personal motivations (e.g., differing desires or time-lines for quitting smoking), and manage experiences of emotional synchrony (e.g., the convergence or similarity of scores on a specific index of emotion–like affect; Butner et al., 2007; Hatfield et al., 1993). In this study, we will investigate whether baseline synchrony/concordance in relationship satisfaction (operationalized via the difference of item-level and scale-level scores on the Relationship Assessment Scale; RAS) will predict synchrony/concordance in daily attempts to quit smoking (operationalized via similar or differing responses on a binary prompt probing morning plan to quit smoking).
