Popis: There is renewed interest in the practice of flame cultivation as a complement to mechanical cultivation and a partial or total replacement for herbicides in vegetable crops. This interest is fueled by three factors: (1) an increasingly negative public perception of herbicide use in vegetables, (2) a limited selection of herbicides labelled for vegetables, and (3) limited efficacy of some of the registered herbicides. Flame cultivation, in combination with mechanical cultivation, can replace or complement herbicides in some vegetable crops. Flame cultivation bursts plant cell walls as the weeds are heated. Most vegetable crops must be protected from the flame. This can be done with a height differential between weeds and crop, a water shield (water sprayed from a flat fan spray nozzle), or a physical shield.
