Pondering the good life and how to lead it is probably a modern luxury (or perhaps a curse; people seem to differ on this issue). Our hunter-gatherer ancestors appear to have had plenty of spare time for reflection (Winterhalder, 1993), but because they had so little choice in how they made a living, it seems unlikely that this topic was a source of concern or contemplation for them. Nevertheless, even if the question is a uniquely modern one, there is reason to believe that a substantial part of the answer can be found in our distant past. Evolutionary pressures shaped our motivational system to guide us toward reproductive success, and thus consideration of our evolutionary imperatives might help us gain some traction on what it means to lead a good life. |
