The Centris bees of the Caatinga region The Caatinga, the semiarid region of northeast portion of Brazil, extends across the states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia and the northern part of Minas Gerais (see Zanella 2000, 2003 and references therein). Studies on the bee fauna of the Caatinga have revealed some very relevant aspects, such as the presence of endemic species and some examples of relatively complex relationships between elements of its flora and their pollinators, mainly native bees (Zanella & Martins, 2003). Different papers (listed in the Table 1), have shown the importance of Centris in the pollination ecology of the flora of the Caatinga, mainly through their role in the reproduction of plant species that offer oil as a reward. A list of the Centris species that occur in the Caatinga can be found in Table 1. Species State* Reference C. hyptidis Ducke BA Aguiar et al. (2003) PB Aguiar et al.
