Popis: The release of highly automated driving functions requires a thorough validation of safety. In this paper, the recently introduced 3-circles model is recapitulated. Based on the 3-circles model, the possible areas of application of simulations to the validation procedure are analyzed and possible challenges and limitations of simulation-based methods are given and discussed. An overview and classification of current simulation concepts is presented. Afterwards, recent research on the implementation details of simulations is discussed.
