SummaryThe early afternoon percentage of full–sun photosynthetically active radiation (FS-PAR) was determined at anthesis, preharvest, and postharvest in the west half of ‘Willamette’ red raspberry canopies. Most of the flowers at anthesis (55%) and fruit at preharvest (59%) were in the 0–25% exposure interval of the canopy. The distribution of flowers at anthesis and fruit at preharvest were highly correlated with leaf area. The number of fruit per unit leaf area and per lateral node increased with increasing light exposure. Fruit set at greater than 25% FS-PAR was approx. 90%, while only about 46% of the flowers in the 0–25% exposure interval produced fruit. Primocane growth between anthesis and preharvest caused most of the change in light exposure and volume within the plant canopy. Primocane leaf area increased 483%, while floricane leaf area decreased 13%. Approximately 58% of the primocane nodes were in the 0–25% exposure interval at pre- and postharvest. |
