BACKGROUND Background: A thorough pre-operative patient counselling plays a crucial role in the post-operative pain management. The primary objective was to study the effect of pre-operatively educating the patients about pain on the VAS in post-operative period. OBJECTIVE : A thorough pre-operative patient counselling plays a crucial role in the post-operative pain management. The primary objective was to study the effect of pre-operatively educating the patients about pain on the VAS in post-operative period. METHODS The study was done in 70 ASA grade I and II patients in two groups of 35 each, undergoing elective lower limb orthopaedic surgeries lasting for a period of less than 4 hours under spinal anaesthesia. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference in the mean VAS scores at the 8th, 16th, and 24th hour post-operative period between the study and control groups. CONCLUSIONS Pre- operative education on pain helped the pain care team towards better planning of management strategies, and also the patients by reduced post- operative pain and thereby improved their general condition.
