Popis: Data are presented for three average sets of weather conditions that show the temperature and humidity gradients which develop within the canopy of Cladina alpestris. Temperature gradients of up to 17 °C develop in late August under partially cloudy skies, and it is suggested that gradients in excess of 20 °C will be a normal feature in spruce–lichen woodland in July under clear skies. These findings are discussed briefly in relation to the growth of Cladina alpestris and the potential differences in physiological activity of the canopy strata.
