Popis: Enzymes are biocatalysts, which have found widespread applications in the chemical industry. Both reaction engineering as well as protein engineering using modern microbiological tools have been instrumental to extend the substrate and reaction scope beyond the natural function of wildtype enzymes. In this article an overview about the various steps necessary for the development of an enzymatic process are given, followed by a discussion of all major enzyme classes and its applications in organic synthesis. The regeneration of cofactors and questions of selectivity will receive special attention. Keywords: biocatalysis; oxidoreductases; transferases; hydrolases; lyases; cofactor regeneration; enantioselectivity
