Oriented single crystals of waspaloy were exposed to laser shocks along the 〈001〉 axis at power densities of 3 and 9.5 × 10 9 W cm −2 . Prio to testing, the spatial distribution of the beam energy was measured. Computations were performed to determine the depth of the plastically deformed zone and the stress field. Deformation processes were studied by transmission electron microscopy and compared with those produced by conventional tests (such as creep tests and dynamical compression experiments). The observations showed that the very high strain rates produced by laser shocks influence significantly the deformation modes. |
