This chapter presents the case of a man with alcoholic neuropathy who has refractory pain to several lines of treatments. Given the refractory nature of the pain and the severity and impact on his daily life, he was encouraged to start hypnosis. Although hypnosis has been shown to be effective for acute pain, evidence is weaker for chronic pain. There are no clear predictive factors of the response, but there are virtually no side effect and very few contraindications. Other complementary techniques for chronic neuropathic pain include mindfulness, acupuncture, relaxation, yoga, and biofeedback. The level of evidence for their efficacy, specifically with regard to neuropathic pain, is limited and better documented for mindfulness. |
