Popis: This study evaluated the accuracy of the Hand Volumeter manufactured by Volumeters Unlimited. Following the method recommended by the manufacturer, water displacement measurements were taken on 13 edematous and 16 normal hands and a rubber model. Standard deviation, 95% probability range, and coefficient of variation were established for each data set. Inter- and intrarater reliability were determined for each group. The volumeter was found to be accurate to within 1% of the total volume when successive measurements are performed by one examiner. Data were also subjected to analysis to rule out inherent test error and to establish a true representation in milliliters (ml) of an actual change in tissue volume. It was determined that measurements must differ by 10 ml in a normal hand and by 12 ml in an edematous hand when taken by a given tester. Additionally factors leading to possible inaccuracies in measuring are discussed.
