A polarization-independent modulator based on the electro-optical (EO) effect is a key element for optical communication networks, whereas second-harmonic generation (SHG) is essential for high-density optical storage1. Triple-stack layers are required to form a waveguide which usually consists of an EO or nonlinear optically active (NLO) guiding layer and two claddings2. With polymer materials, triple stacks may have three active layers (two active claddings and the guiding layer). For example, the same guest/host or side-chain polymer may be employed, but with a different amount of nonlinear optical dipoles in each layer. Triple-stack preparation by spin coating is still possible if different solvents are used for the individual layers. The device design consists of a two-step procedure. First the waveguide geometry is optimized, then the overall design is developed. It will be shown that poling is as an additional degree of freedom in the system design. |
