Popis: The detectability of a sinusoidal signal of 1100 sec duration and variable frequency was measured in the presence of a sinusoidal masker. The masker frequency was fixed in power. For a continuous masker, the data agreed essentially with those reported by Wegel and Lane in their classic paper and with the recent studies by Small and by Ehmer. When the masker was gated, it lasted 1100 sec and was simultaneous with the signal. At or near the signal frequency, there was little difference in the amount of masking produced by the two conditions, although gating the masker produced somewhat more masking, about 5 dB. Off frequency, e.g., at 4200 cps with a 3000‐cps masker, the gated condition produced substantially more masking, e.g., 25–30 dB. Masking frequencies of 250, 1000, and 3000 cps were studied; somewhat smaller differences occurred at the lower frequencies.
