Popis: | Introduction Yersinia enterocolitica is one of the frequent pathogen of gastro-intestinal tract infections. The clinical manifestations depend on the age and physiological condition of the host. Case report We present the case of 11-days-old female newborn (from young, healthy parents, from first uncomplicated pregnancy, Apgar score 10 points) admitted to our hospital due to fever of 39°C and loose stools which started on the 8 th day of her life. Yersinia enterocolitica biotype 1b, serotype 0:8 as etiology of infection was diagnosed on the basis of positive stool culture. Gradual improvement of patient's clinical condition and her laboratory investigations results were observed from day 4 of treatment. On 7 th day of treatment hepatosplenomegaly was found in physical examination, and ultrasound examination revealed multiple, small hypoechogenic lesions localized in the liver and in the spleen, which might have been abscesses. Antibiotics were changed – amoxicillin with clavulanic acid were stopped and cephalosporin of 3 rd generation (cefotaxim) was initiated. Clinical condition of the patient improved, and subsequent ultrasound examinations showed regression of lesions in the liver and in the spleen. Following 21 days of antibiotic therapy laboratory and ultrasound results were back to their normal levels. Conclusions Yersinia enterocolitica is very rare in newborns. Complications described have been rarely reported. |
