Popis: This chapter illustrates the importance of sound epidemiology to the improvement and development of medical care and health services, starting with the contributions of Florence Nightingale in the middle of 19th century, which contributed both to improvement in the care of soldiers in a war, but also to the design of hospitals and the measurement of performance in peacetime. In all countries there is an inexorable growth in demand for health services. Thus, there is need to develop evidence for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of both health service and health practice.
