Popis: Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of a solenoid with a uniform magnetic field. It also presents the theory and design are given of a solenoid producing a uniform magnetic field over the major part of its length. The winding of the solenoid is of a constant diameter and is made of sections with different current densities. The chapter also describes a constructed solenoid in which the field variation is within ±0·07%. This is determined by the precision of manufacture of the windings. An efficient winding technique permits magnetic fields of several tens of kilogauss to be achieved. In the construction of the solenoid, the winding consists of a number of sections of the same size, connected in series. The number of turns increases as the ends of the winding are approached. The main problem consists of ensuring the necessary current density. An important quantity is the ratio of the number of turns required over the end and middle sections for increasing the current density toward the ends of the coil.
