Popis: A twelve month telephone survey was conducted to assess the comprehension of nutrition education for patients receiving inpatient cardiac rehabilitation in an acute care setting. Sixty randomly selected patients (29 females and 33 males) were surveyed (five per month) approximately one month after discharge from the hospital. Each patient was asked to respond to a series of seven open-ended questions related to their knowledge of their modified diet, current eating habits/behavior changes, level of participation in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, and session with the Registered Dietitian (RD) while hospitalized. Patients were also asked to demonstrate their knowledge of low fat, low sodium restrictions by recalling three foods that have increased levels of total fat and sodium. The patients' responses were aggregated into data by gender and age categories (five age categories with age range of 31-85 years old). Positive responses to the questions for males and females averaged 54%. Males and females in the 50-59 year old age category scored the highest number of positive responses (78.5%). With the exception of the 60-69 year old age category, females in all categories scored higher than males. The lowest percentage of positive responses was found with the 80+ age category (35.75%). Implications from this survey highlight the need for continued nutrition education post hospital stay. The study also suggests that the greater number of positive responses from females may correlate with the traditional role of women to assume responsibility for meal planning and preparation in the home. It can also be concluded that age may be a factor in the level of comprehension of nutrition education in all patients, and that more frequent reiteration of principles is needed with the elderly population.
