The non-uniform and fluctuating air density field surrounding a high performance aircraft can significantly affect the performance of visual infrared imaging sensors. This paper addresses each of the classic types of flow field phenomena and develops theory for incoming optical wavefronts. Parametrics are presented for several flight conditions, and guidelines are discussed for minimizing sensor performance degradation due to these effects.© (1976) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
