The Mission Municipal Forest is the oldest community forest in British Columbia. Established in 1958, it has been a model of how community forests can be managed to consistently meet environmental, social, and economic objectives. The municipal forest has an outstanding reputation among the local community for responsible resource management. In addition, the local community is well aware of the wide range of values the forest brings to the community and region at large. With a sustainable harvest level of 45,000 cubic meters (1.59 million cubic feet) per year, the municipal forest generates more than 100 full-time local and regional jobs. From surplus forest revenues, the revenues generated from the municipal forest have contributed more than $10,000,000 Canadian dollars to local projects and the municipal budget. This chapter describes the development of the forest management plan and some of the interesting challenges that were encountered. |
