The surface topography and dimensional accuracy of additively manufactured components are commonly insufficient for industrial applications. Therefore, subtractive processes such as grinding are applied for finishing. In this study, the effect of selective laser melting on the grindability of the stainless steel AISI 316L is analyzed by means of the process forces, the surface topography and the subsurface integrity of the ground workpieces. The results show that the grindability in comparison to casted AISI 316L changes. Common knowledge on grinding of specific materials is hence not readily transferable to the same, yet additively manufactured material. |
