The chapter focuses on the social structure of the Vietnamese diaspora in the CR, its everyday life and the role of parallel power structures in the diaspora. Within the diaspora, two components can be identified, the legal and the illegal one. The Czech and Vietnamese criminal undergrounds live in a specific symbiosis with the legal part of the diaspora, where legal and illegal activities are frequently merged together. This symbiosis is the result of the transplantation of the traditional Vietnamese mentality and cultural patterns to the environment of emigrant communities living in the Western cultural space. It is sometimes very difficult to separate the two parts on the basis of European social and legal norms. |
