Popis: A study was carried out to determine the feasibility of studying hypertension among New York City high school students and to get some idea of the distribution of blood pressure among adolescents. The study showed a high degree of compliance to blood pressure testing among the students with over 90 per cent participation. Examinations of the distribution of blood pressures show race and sex differences consistent with investigations of adult populations—generally higher pressures among adolescent males than females and blacks as compared to whites. With respect to age, the per cent of elevated pressures was generally higher in the older age groups (16 and above). Difference in blood pressure distribution seems not to be related to socioeconomic status. In addition a significant number was found to be hypertensive by adult standards.
