This article presents the results of a multiple case study carried out in five newsrooms on three continents: Correio Braziliense, O Globo (Brazil), La Nacion (Costa Rica), and BBC and Reuters (United Kingdom). The purpose of the analysis was to explore the effect of technological convergence on journalistic organizations and professional culture at a time when production routines are accelerating, staffs are being reduced, revenues are declining and public participation is increasing. The methodology consisted of visiting the newsrooms and conducting interviews with journalists. The analysis results confirm that there are doubts and uncertainties about using new platforms—which includes social media—and that there is a kind of experimentalism when it comes to using advanced resources despite the common ground that media organizations share: innovations are disseminated and the newspaper industry is forced to adapt. |
