Popis: | The area of interest in the Republic of Panama (Fig. 1) is divided east to west by the Serrania del Darien, with an elevation between 1000 and 2000, although there are several higher peaks. The crest of the Serrania is only some 10 to 15 miles from the Caribbean. The broad, relatively flat basins of the Chucunaque, Tuira, and Bayano on the Pacific side are generally below the 300-ft contour. Because of the precipitous rise of the Serrania, the great majority of the rivers are steeply inclined and quite short. On the Caribbean side, the rivers are generally less than 15 km in length and discharge directly into the sea. On the Pacific slope of the Serrania, the rivers average about 30 km in length and discharge into the three main drainage rivers: the Bayano, Rio Chucunaque, and Rio Tuira. The Rio Bayano, about 100 miles in length, discharges into the Pacific 35 miles east of Panama City and drains the central valley to the west. The Rio Chucunaque, about 120 miles in length, drains to the east and discharges into the Rio Tuira at the town of El Real. The Rio Tuira drains to the west from the Colom |
