Children around the globe experience neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, and economic exploitation. These violations of children’s rights occur within homes, at school, at work, in communal spaces, and over the Internet. Societal crises such as armed conflicts or natural disasters and their aftermath can further precipitate direct and vicarious exposure to violence. These overwhelming and intolerable life experiences can have profound immediate and long-term negative impacts on the brains, minds, and bodies of children. Traumatized children require a trauma-specific approach to ameliorate their trauma symptoms. At the same time, trauma-informed approaches in policies and settings could organically uphold the core principles of children’s rights. |
