In this chapter, the authors are going to focus on the issue of development by looking at a central topic of developmental psychology, namely the development of mental or 'cognitive' abilities that are connected with acquiring, storing and using knowledge. In the rest of the chapter, the authors show how other researchers have taken up and tested some of Piaget's key ideas and, in so doing, have questioned some of the central assumptions of his theory. They take a look at the development of children's social understanding in the light of Piaget's general theory, concentrating on research conducted with preschool and early school-age children. In this chapter, the authors have taken a closer look at how children's ability to make social inferences develops. They examine work by researchers who reject Piaget's theory of parallel development and claim instead that children's intellectual development depends on their development of social understanding. |
