Analysis of Working Postures Leading to Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Employees in Garment Manufacturing Units—A Case Study

Popis: India is one among the major producers of textiles and garments in the world. The sector contributes 4% to the Gross Domestic Product and employs over 45 million people. The garment manufacturing units in the state of Karnataka are concentrated in Bangalore, and some of the largest export houses in the country coexist. Initial studies reveal that the work environment in the garment manufacturing units is unhealthy and unsafe for the workers, resulting in several health problems. Postural analysis of employees’ activities in raw material and components stores of garment manufacturing units is conducted using a bouquet of ergonomic techniques. The study revealed that employees in this industry often work under difficult conditions involving poor postures of the trunk, neck, and upper extremities and the monotonous repetitive movements which result in a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders. Based on the study, suitable interventions in the form safe postures are recommended. The employees were provided basic training on the benefits of practicing correct postures and certain forms of stretching exercises. Also a list of medical prescriptions were provided for immediate treatment of affected employees.
