Turbocharging is likely to play a key role in the development of trend-setting spark-ignition engines of the future. New turbocharger concepts are making a major contribution towards solving the conflict of objectives between the desire for higher engine output and greater driving dynamics on the one hand and the demand for improved fuel economy in modern vehicles on the other. Based on BMW specifications and in close cooperation with various partner companies, Boysen has developed the exhaust system for the 3.0-l six-cylinder inline spark-ignition engine with twin turbo technology. Integrating the two turbochargers presented new challenges for the exhaust system specialist in terms of structural dynamics, flow technology and acoustics. |
