Popis: | This study compares the effect of group and individual pre-test counseling on uptake of voluntary counseling and testing by African pregnant women and knowledge about HIV/AIDS. The study was conducted in 2 antenatal clinics in Bobo-Dioulasso Burkina Faso. Pre-test counseling was offered to 3958 pregnant women at 7 or fewer months gestation aged at least 18 years and living within city limits. The pre-test counseling was performed in a group by social workers during the first 6 months of the study from January to June 1995 and individually from July 1995 to June 1996. Of the total 3958 pregnant women 927 received group pre-counseling while 3031 received individual counseling. These two groups were comparable with respect to age educational level occupation religion marital status number of previous pregnancies and parity. Acceptance of the test improved with individual counseling which was already high with group counseling. The return rate for results was independent of the pre-test counseling technique and the HIV status of pregnant women. At post-test session knowledge about HIV/AIDS was generally better after group counseling than the individual except for reporting the existence of an asymptomatic stage of HIV infection. The findings of this study will help program managers in the field of maternal and child health to choose optimal option of pre-test counseling adapted to local circumstances in resource-poor settings. |
