Popis: | The possibility that significant quantities of plutonium could fall into the wrong hands a real security threat for the US and other states that have nuclear weapons. According to a recent study by the Carnegie Endow ment for International Peace, the nuclear states have accumulated nearly 250tonne of "weapons-grade" plutonium between them, some 100tonne of which was declared sur plus to requirements by the US and Russia in 1998. But complete fissioning of just 1kg of this material – of which 93% is the fissile isotope plutonium-239, the key ingredient for a plutonium-based nuclear weapon – has roughly as much explosive power as each of the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the Second World War. |
