Tight buds of carnation cultivar ‘Scania 3C’ were cut at 3 stages of development with bud diameters of 5, 10 or 20 mm, and were then kept in various solutions to stimulate bud opening. Basic solutions, containing 8-HQS, 200 mg/l and sucrose 5%, or AgNO 3 , 200 mg/l and sucrose 10%, were supplied with GA 3 , 100, 200, 400 mg/l; BA, 20, 50 mg/l; NAA, 20 mg/l or ABA, 50, 100, 150 mg/l. The smallest tight buds were able to open in controlled conditions within a short period. GA 3 treatment stimulated bud opening, decreased longevity of opened flowers and discolouration of calyxes and colour petals. Treatment with BA improved the longevity of opened flowers and their quality. BA, applied to buds in the higher sucrose concentration, prevented the splitting of flower calyxes. Treatment with NAA produced an effect similar to BA. Flowers originating from NAA-treated buds had green calyxes and more rigid stems, but were of lower longevity. ABA, added to the medium of 10% sucrose and AgNO 3 , greatly increased the fresh weight of the flowers. It caused, however, darkening of colour of the petals and their curling toward the inside of the flower. |
