There is a lack of both quantitative and qualitative academic data on the productive contribution of women in the MENA region. Part of this is due to the fact that much women’s work occurs within the informal sector. This chapter provides an overview of women’s economic status and their role in the economy and contextualizes the research findings while providing the reader with some background knowledge about events in post-revolutionary Iran and with regard to women’s economic status since the late 1970s. |
