MOST previous research on the reign of Edward II has tended to concentrate attention upon opposition to the monarchy during the periods of major political crisis, one result of this being the relative neglect of the remaining quieter portions of the reign which harboured the seeds of these troubles. This approach has also meant that there has been insufficient study of the individual role of any of the leading political figures. Consequently any attempt to trace the career of one of the important magnates might not only be expected to throw fresh light upon his own activities but also to help fill many of the gaps in our knowledge of the reign of Edward II.... |
