The goal of these cross-linguistic experiments is to ascertain the difference among disjunctive particles with respect to their ability to give rise to ad-hoc inferences. For the purposes of this experiment, we define ad-hoc inferences as follows: the utterance "A or B" may or may not give rise to the ad-hoc inference is that there is no other element of which the relevant property holds, so in other words, "Not C". The experiment will be run on multiple disjunction particles within a language and accross languages. |
