The influence of evaporation on measurements of diffusion by the heterogeneous isotopic exchange technique has been examined. A standard solution for diffusion involving moving boundaries has been adapted and used to analyse our results. Our measurements on bromine diffusion in potassium bromide show that evaporation of the crystal influences the diffusion measurement at surprisingly low temperatures. This conclusion also seems to apply to many of the reported isotopic exchange measurements and to measurements of fission gas diffusion made by the gas release method. Based on this study a criterion is suggested to decide when the solution with evaporation should be applied. It is further shown that if there is appreciable evaporation it is not in general correct to use the method of measuring diffusion coefficients on one specimen at successive temperatures. For this procedure to be used the velocity of evaporation and the diffusion coefficient must have the same temperature dependence. |
