This paper presents design considerations and results for a hybrid solar system installed at a residence in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. Design considerations include the choice of inverter, solar panels as well as the arrangement and mounting of the solar panels. Results presented illustrate the effect of the solar system for different scenarios typical of hybrid inverter behaviour in that energy can be utilized from the utility grid, solar panels or from the battery pack. Furthermore, energy not utilized by loads can be stored back into the grid under certain settings within the inverter. Electrical energy utilization and storage needs to be optimized for specific circumstances, for which illustrations are given. Suitable conclusions are reached, and suggestions made.
