Popis:	The paper explores the emergence of academic spin-out companies at Cambridge University at the end of the 1990s. Real time evidence free of the usual survivor bias was generated by participant observation in a DTI funded mentoring scheme. A conceptual scheme for differentiating between types of academic enterprise is provided and used to examine factors affecting withdrawals and progress along the route to market. This shows the benefits of proactive mentoring.
