Popis: | This paper profiles the Pen Pal Program at Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center, in Somerset, Massachusetts, a program that pairs residents of the Clifton long-term care facility with students from South Elementary School. Program participants are gaining a better appreciation and understanding of each other's generations through weekly written correspondence. The Pen Pal Program enables residents to interact with young people in a meaningful way and allows residents to contribute to the “future of their community.” In turn, the students develop better writing skills in the context of a real-world activity. Students and residents also develop a bond that is physically joined by letter writing and is emotionally uplifting. The benefits of the program can be seen in both age groups' willingness to continue corresponding even when the formal program ends. The Pen Pal Program is an excellent model of an intergenerational program for a residential care facility. |
