Popis: The effects of experimentally manipulated recipient need and anticipation of reciprocity on prosocial exchange were examined. Urban adolescents from central India participated in donor-recipient dyads in a task involving possible help-seeking, helping, and reciprocity. Contrary to expectations, help-seeking was significantly greater in low-need than in high-need conditions because of the psychological costs of help-seeking, and remained uninfluenced by anticipation of reciprocity. Helping was not significantly affected by either need or anticipation. The relative salience of need over anticipated reciprocity in help-seeking was attributed to situational rather than sociocultural influences.
