Popis: This chapter illustrates a moral economy of international medical aid in Haiti, and examines the morally saturated categories of interest, credit, and debt in order to reveal some of the less visible dimensions of aid encounters. Young Haitian clinicians see their interests as lying abroad. Meanwhile, foreign aid groups' interests in strengthening Haiti’s health care system are increasingly contingent on the nonemigration of Haitian professionals. While Haitian clinicians assert that not receiving recognition for their efforts is an important factor in fueling their departure, foreign aid workers, volunteers, and students continue to receive various forms of credit for their work in Haiti. Finally, aid and emigration are both responses to and instigators of various types of debt, ranging from remittances to the relatives who contributed to visa fees and a plane ticket to Miami to the care of strangers as a form of giving back one’s good fortune.
