Sustainable development has for a long time attracted the attention of economists and policy makers. Yet, there are few studies of sustainable development indicators, particularly in Indonesian regions. This paper presents an empirical assessment of sustainable development in Indonesia at provincial level. It contributes to the general literature. Firstly, the paper reviews the existing literature on the concepts and theory of sustainable development. It then applies a composite index method to examine relevant indicators of sustainable development in the Indonesian regions context. Various scenarios are considered in order to accommodate the different nature of Indonesian regions in terms of sustainable development aspects i.e. economic, social, environmental and institutional aspects. The findings confirm that the development in Indonesia emphasises the short term goal, by focusing on the economic and social aspects but ignores the environment aspect. |
